Domestic observers have praised the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission for the smooth and professional handling of the ongoing Local Government elections, even as some polling areas experienced low voter turnout.
Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, Chairman of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission, expressed admiration for LASIEC’s level of coordination and execution during an inspection tour.
He noted that Lagos could serve as a model for other states seeking to improve their electoral processes.
“I am already copying everything here to apply it to our local government elections in Edo State,” Aifuobhokhan said. “We will invite LASIEC to come to our aid in Edo to help us improve on our processes. Everywhere seems peaceful, with no crisis of any kind.”
Similarly, Chairman of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission, Chief Charles Ejiogu, commended LASIEC for its detailed planning and the peaceful environment observed at polling stations he visited.
“I am sure that at the end of the day, Lagosians would have every reason to be happy,” Ejiogu said, encouraging eligible voters to seize the opportunity and participate in the process.
While applauding the general conduct of the election, the observers noted a relatively low voter turnout in some areas, including Mushin, Ilupeju, Coker-Aguda, and Surulere, where only a handful of voters were present at polling units by midday.
Despite this, they agreed that LASIEC had done a commendable job in maintaining a disruption-free election and urged the commission to further strengthen voter sensitization to improve participation in future elections.
With voting and collation ongoing, observers widely agreed that the Lagos local government elections were marked by transparency, calm, and credibility.
