Team Nigeria added another medal to its growing tally at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Monday, as Ruth Asuquo Nyong secured silver in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event.
Competing at the SEC Armadillo, Nyong produced an impressive display to finish with a combined lift of 168kg, earning Nigeria its seventh medal of the Games.
The Nigerian lifter began strongly in the snatch, recording a best lift of 75kg to place third behind India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom, who lifted 85kg, and Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry with 77kg.
Nyong then delivered a decisive performance in the clean and jerk, successfully lifting 93kg to move into second place with a total of 168kg.
Her effort saw her narrowly finish ahead of Malaysia’s Henry, who managed a combined 167kg to settle for bronze.
India’s Chanu retained her Commonwealth title in dominant fashion, posting a total lift of 190kg and setting a new Games record in the process.
Nyong’s silver medal further boosted Nigeria’s impressive campaign in Glasgow, where the country has already enjoyed significant success in para powerlifting, winning multiple gold and silver medals.
With the athletics events yet to begin, Team Nigeria is expected to add to its medal count as several of its top track and field athletes prepare to compete in the coming days.
The latest podium finish also strengthens Nigeria’s push towards the National Sports Commission’s medal target for the Games.
Nyong’s achievement was warmly celebrated within the Nigerian camp, with teammates and officials praising her contribution to the country’s growing success in Scotland.
