Team Nigeria heads to Glasgow for Commonwealth Games

With just three days to the start of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the first batch of Team Nigeria athletes and officials will leave their pre-Games training base in Aberdeen, Scotland, for Glasgow on Tuesday, The Punch reports.

Another contingent is expected to arrive in the host city on Friday, July 24, as the team gradually settles into the Games Village ahead of the competition.

The staggered relocation comes after an extensive preparation period in Aberdeen, where athletes underwent intensive training and acclimatisation.

Throughout the camp, the National Sports Commission provided technical, medical and welfare support aimed at ensuring the Nigerian contingent reaches Glasgow in top competitive shape.

Sprinter Favour Ashe expressed satisfaction with the standard of the camp, noting that athletes had received all their allowances before the Games.

“The camp has been excellent. Our allowances have been paid in full, the facilities are world-class, and the feeding is of a very high standard. The National Sports Commission has done a fantastic job in ensuring we have everything we need to prepare for the Commonwealth Games,” Ashe said.

He added that the smooth welfare arrangements allowed athletes to focus entirely on training without concerns over unpaid entitlements or other distractions.

Former world and Olympic wrestling champion Daniel Igali had also praised the NSC leadership in an earlier interview, applauding the quality of preparations put in place for Team Nigeria.

Nigeria heads into the Games with renewed confidence following impressive performances on the continental and international stage.

Leading the medal charge is world record holder Tobi Amusan, who linked up with the Aberdeen camp last week after another consistent Diamond League season that secured her qualification for the season-ending final in Brussels, Belgium.

The 29-year-old is aiming to win a third straight Commonwealth Games 100m hurdles title, having claimed gold in 2018 and 2022.

She arrives in Glasgow as the favourite after retaining her African crown in Ghana earlier this year and matching her season-best time of 12.28 seconds on three occasions.

However, Team Nigeria has been dealt a significant blow with the injury withdrawal of long jump champion Ese Brume, ruling her out of the defence of the Commonwealth title she won with a Games record leap of 7.00m at the last edition.

Ruth Usoro has been named as Brume’s replacement and will compete alongside Prestina Ochonogor in the women’s long jump event.
