Nine injured as Russia strikes Ukraine

At least nine people were injured following a series of Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine overnight, prompting neighboring Poland to deploy fighter jets and heighten its air defence systems.

Kyiv Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, described the assault on the capital as “massive,” urging residents to remain in shelters.

“In total, there are five injured,” Klitschko confirmed via Telegram, noting that the victims had been hospitalized.

The Zaporizhzhia regional governor also reported that four civilians sustained injuries after residential buildings and public infrastructure were struck.

Andriy Yermak, Chief of Staff to Ukraine’s President, condemned the bombardment, stressing that Russia continues to wage war against ordinary people.

“Once again, residential buildings and infrastructure are being hit. Once again, it is a war against civilians,” Yermak said.

He added that while Kyiv would respond militarily, “the West’s economic blows against Russia must also be stronger.”

Poland’s Armed Forces said on X (formerly Twitter) that it scrambled combat aircraft and placed ground-based defences on high alert to secure its airspace.

The military explained that the action was “preventive and aimed at protecting citizens, especially in areas bordering Ukraine.”

The incident comes amid growing tensions in Eastern Europe, with several NATO member states accusing Russia of recent airspace violations. Moscow, however, denied plans to attack any NATO nation, warning the alliance against “escalatory responses.”

Meanwhile, officials in Kyiv and Moscow confirmed that the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, Europe’s largest, has been disconnected from Ukraine’s power grid for four consecutive days.

The shutdown has renewed fears of a potential nuclear accident in the conflict zone.
