Nigeria beat Jamaica on penalties to win Unity Cup

Nigeria’s national football team triumphed in a dramatic penalty shootout on Saturday evening, defeating Jamaica 5-4 to lift the 2025 Unity Cup at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium in England.

The hard-fought final ended 2-2 after regulation time, requiring spot kicks to determine the champion.

Moses Simon gave Nigeria an early lead in the 9th minute with a clinical finish just outside the six-yard box. However, Jamaica responded quickly when Kaheim Dixon converted a low cross from Cephas in the 14th minute, capitalizing on a swift counterattack down the left flank.

The Super Eagles regained their advantage eight minutes after halftime as Samuel Chukwueze unleashed a precise left-footed strike from the edge of the box in the 53rd minute. Jamaica equalized again in the 64th minute through Jonathan Russell, who finished another well-worked move assisted by Cephas.

With the score deadlocked after 90 minutes, the match proceeded to penalties where Nigeria displayed remarkable composure. Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Bruno Onyemaechi and Tolu Arokodare all converted their spot kicks before Jamaica’s Atkinson rattled the crossbar with his attempt. Substitute Uche Chriantus sealed Nigeria’s victory by calmly slotting home the decisive fifth penalty.

This victory marks Nigeria’s second Unity Cup title, having previously won the inaugural tournament in 2004. The hard-earned trophy caps an impressive campaign for the Super Eagles, who demonstrated resilience throughout the tense final against a determined Jamaican side.

The match showcased Nigeria’s attacking depth with goals from different scorers, while Jamaica proved dangerous on the counter through their wing play. Both teams created numerous chances in an end-to-end encounter that kept fans enthralled until the final penalty kick.

Nigeria’s victory extends their recent strong form in international competitions and provides momentum ahead of upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
