A section of the newly commissioned 672-metre LAMECO flyover in Osogbo, Osun State, has been damaged, barely weeks after it was opened to traffic.
According to Vanguard, Governor Ademola Adeleke inaugurated the flyover on July 1, 2026, and officially opened it for public use.
The affected portion reportedly caved in in the early hours of Friday after an almost eight-hour downpour that lasted from Thursday into Friday in the Osun State capital.
The incident created a noticeable depression on one section of the bridge, prompting concern among motorists and residents, many of whom diverted to alternative routes.
Vanguard reported that the damaged section, located on one lane of the flyover, had visible cracks and a sunken asphalt surface, forcing drivers to reduce speed while passing through the area.
Some commuters expressed worries over the safety of the bridge and called on the government to urgently repair the damaged section to prevent further deterioration.
Security personnel later closed the affected section of the flyover, with operatives of the Amotekun Corps stationed at the site to restrict access.
Reacting to the incident in a statement, the Osun State chapter of the Accord Party alleged that the damage was an act of sabotage by members of the opposition All Progressives Congress.
“The Osun Accord has received credible reports of a disturbing pattern of vandalisation targeting public infrastructure delivered by the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke. These acts are not ordinary criminal activities but appear to be part of a calculated attempt by desperate elements in the opposition APC to undermine and discredit the remarkable achievements of the current administration ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.
“Having failed to match the Governor’s impressive record of performance, these elements seem determined to destroy the very projects that are transforming communities across the state in order to create a false impression of government failure.
“These acts of sabotage is strongly condemned in the strongest terms and those behind them should know that public infrastructure belongs to the people of Osun State, not to any political party.”
