The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Kano State has intercepted 112 kilograms of cannabis sativa following a road accident on the Zaria–Kano Expressway.

According to NDLEA’s Kano State Public Relations Officer, Mr. Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, the incident occurred around 6 a.m. on September 6, when operatives on patrol heard a loud collision involving a Volkswagen Golf and a truck near Gadar Tamburawa.

“Officers immediately rushed to the scene and rescued the occupants of the Golf. We had to remove the windscreen, windows, and door to extricate both the driver and the passenger,” Muhammad-Maigatari said.

He added that the passenger tried to flee but was apprehended by the operatives. A search of the vehicle revealed 150 blocks and three sacks of loose cannabis, weighing a total of 112 kilograms.

“The driver, who is receiving medical treatment, confessed to representing the consignor and admitted making similar deliveries within and outside Kano,” Muhammad-Maigatari stated.

The NDLEA spokesperson also noted that the driver attempted to use a one-way route to avoid checkpoints.

“The crash resulted in a truck driver sustaining a fracture. The incident involves two offences: one-way driving leading to a collision and trafficking in narcotics,” he explained.

He further commended the patrol officers for their professionalism and swift action.

“Their efforts reflect the effective leadership of our chairman, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.),” Muhammad-Maigatari said.

He urged the public to refrain from drug trafficking and to report any suspicious movements of illegal substances to the NDLEA.
