Nations League: Yamal scores as Spain beat England 3-2

World champions, Spain surrendered an early lead before fighting back to defeat England 3-2 at Wembley on Saturday in a thrilling Nations League encounter, extending their unbeaten run to 39 matches.

Lamine Yamal gave Spain the lead in the second minute after capitalising on a defensive error by Marc Guehi.

The Barcelona winger collected the loose ball before curling a left-footed effort against the inside of the post and into the net.

England responded in the 36th minute when Barcelona winger Anthony Gordon finished a well-worked counter-attack after receiving Jude Bellingham’s pass.

The hosts then completed the turnaround four minutes later as captain Harry Kane rose to head Nico O’Reilly’s cross into the net after the ball took a deflection off Spain defender Marc Cucurella.

England had the opportunity to strengthen their advantage early in the second half after being awarded a penalty following a VAR review for Rodri’s foul on Bellingham.

However, Kane slipped while taking the spot-kick and saw his effort crash against the crossbar.

Spain punished England’s failure to convert the chance, with substitute Alex Baena restoring parity in the 60th minute after O’Reilly lost possession and Dani Olmo helped create the opening.

The visitors completed the comeback when Baena turned provider for Mikel Oyarzabal, who calmly lifted the ball over goalkeeper James Trafford to seal Spain’s 3-2 victory.

The result extended Spain’s remarkable unbeaten streak, while England were denied victory over the side that beat them in the Euro 2024 final.
