Nations League: Isak, Gyökeres score as Sweden beat Romania 2-1

Sweden opened their Nations League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Romania at the Strawberry Arena in Solna on Friday, with Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres finding the net.

Sweden started brightly and took the lead when Yasin Ayari picked out Isak, who finished to put the hosts ahead.

Romania responded as Dennis Man restored parity after rounding Sweden defender Victor Nilsson Lindelöf before slotting the ball home.

Sweden regained the advantage shortly before half-time when Gyökeres struck to make it 2-1.

The hosts thought they had extended their lead after Elliot Stroud fired into the top corner, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR review for a handball by Isak earlier in the move.

Sweden were dealt another blow when Emil Holm was carried off on a stretcher after appearing to suffer a thigh injury.

Romania increased the pressure in the closing stages but could not find a second equaliser as Sweden held on for the win.

Sweden will next face Poland at the Strawberry Arena on Monday, while Romania will look to respond in their next Nations League fixture.
