Morocco hold Zambia to 2-2 draw in WAFCON opener

Host nation Morocco snatched a dramatic 2-2 draw against Zambia in the opening fixture of Group A at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.

The clash was a rematch of sorts, as both teams impressed in the 2022 edition, Morocco finishing as runners-up and Zambia securing third place.

Zambia got off to a dream start when star striker Barbara Banda found the net just two minutes into the contest.

She latched onto a pass, surged toward the Moroccan penalty area, and fired a low shot that slipped beneath the goalkeeper’s gloves.

Morocco responded quickly and were handed a lifeline after a VAR review confirmed Grace Chanda had fouled Najat Badri in the box.

Ibtissam Jraidi stepped up and calmly slotted home the penalty in the 12th minute, sending the Zambian keeper the wrong way.

Zambia restored their lead in the 28th minute thanks to Racheal Kundananji, who was set up brilliantly by Banda’s precise assist.

But with just two minutes left in regulation time, Morocco captain Ghizlane Chebbak broke Zambian hearts, firing in a late equalizer to secure a point for the hosts.

Group A action continues on Sunday, July 6, with Senegal facing off against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Meanwhile, nine-time champions Nigeria’s Super Falcons will open their WAFCON campaign against Tunisia, also on Sunday.
