The Defence Headquarters has assured Nigerians of strengthened security measures across the country during the Easter celebrations, while expressing confidence that ongoing collaboration with the United States military will soon deliver visible results.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Micheal Onoja, said the partnership with the U.S. was already contributing significantly to Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts through intelligence sharing and specialised training.
According to him, although the impact of such collaboration may not be immediately evident, the benefits would unfold over time.
“We are receiving critical intelligence and training support from the United States, and this assistance is being provided on very favourable terms,” Onoja said. “Military operations have a gestation period, so the results may not be instant, but in the coming weeks and months, Nigerians will begin to see the difference.”
The Defence Headquarters had earlier confirmed the deployment of about 100 U.S. military personnel and equipment to Bauchi Airfield in February. Authorities clarified that the foreign troops are not engaged in combat but are focused on advisory and technical roles.
Onoja noted that intelligence provided by the U.S. includes actionable information on the location and activities of security threats, which Nigerian forces are already utilising in ongoing operations.
“The intelligence we receive helps us identify hostile elements and take appropriate action,” he said, adding that certain operational details remain confidential for security reasons.
Addressing concerns over persistent insecurity in parts of the country despite the partnership, the military maintained that such collaborations require time to yield measurable outcomes.
On preparations for Easter, the Defence Headquarters said troops have been placed on high alert nationwide to prevent any potential security breaches during the festive period.
“We are aware that festive seasons often come with increased security risks, and our personnel have been fully mobilised to ensure the safety of citizens,” Onoja stated. “This period will not be an exception.”
He emphasised that security agencies would remain vigilant throughout the celebrations, noting that criminal elements often attempt to exploit such occasions.
“We understand that adversaries may see this period as an opportunity, but we are not letting our guard down. Nigerians should go about their activities with confidence, as adequate measures are in place to ensure a peaceful Easter,” he added.
