Man Utd’s Maguire handed 15-month suspended jail term

Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire, has been handed a 15-month suspended sentence by a Greek court over an incident that took place in Mykonos in August 2020.

The centre-back faced charges of non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery, and was found guilty on all three counts.

The Greek prosecution lawyer involved in Maguire’s case has strongly denied any corruption in the proceedings that resulted in a guilty verdict and the suspended prison sentence.

Sky Sports News reported that only one of the three police witnesses attended the hearing on Wednesday.

According to lawyers in Greece, the other two officers were not required to appear as they had already submitted written statements.

Maguire has consistently denied any wrongdoing, and his representatives have privately voiced concerns regarding the handling of the case against him.

His legal team now plans to appeal to the Greek Supreme Court, seeking to clear the England international’s name.

The Mykonos incident occurred after a fight involving Maguire and his family outside a bar in August 2020.

He was initially convicted of assaulting and attempting to bribe police officers, though a retrial had previously been granted, nullifying the original conviction in line with Greek law.

The latest suspended sentence of 15 months is both reduced in duration and severity from the original 21-month term. However, it still represents a second conviction on the same charges.

Maguire’s retrial faced multiple delays, being postponed four times, with the most recent in October 2025 due to “court documents not being translated into English.”

While a fine was initially part of the original sentence, it has now been lifted. Maguire has also rejected several opportunities to resolve the matter financially, determined instead to clear his name through legal channels.

Despite the ongoing proceedings, Maguire was not involved in Wednesday’s court session and has continued his preparations for Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Newcastle as usual.
