Maguire extends Man Utd contract by one season

Harry Maguire will remain at Manchester United for at least another year after agreeing a one-year contract extension with the club.

The 33-year-old defender had been approaching the end of his existing deal, but the new agreement also includes the option of an additional season.

Maguire, who arrived from Leicester City in a then world-record £80 million move for a defender in 2019, expressed his delight at extending his stay at Old Trafford.

“Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour,” Maguire said in a statement issued Tuesday. “It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day.

“I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.”

He added, “You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us.”

Maguire has been a key figure for United since former midfielder Michael Carrick stepped in as caretaker boss following a brief spell under Darren Fletcher after the departure of Ruben Amorim in January.

Since then, United have climbed to third place in the league table and are pushing for a return to the UEFA Champions League.

The centre-back’s improved performances also earned him a recall to the England national football team last month.

He featured in both friendly matches at Wembley, marking his first international appearances in 18 months as he aims to secure a place at this year’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Maguire has made 266 appearances for United and has won both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup during his time at the club.

United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, praised the defender’s contribution.

“Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United.

“He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad.

“Harry, like everyone at the club, is completely determined to help Manchester United to achieve regular and sustained success.”

Maguire is currently with the squad in Dublin for a training camp during a lengthy break between league matches following the recent international window and United’s exit from domestic cup competitions.

United are scheduled to return to action against Leeds United at Old Trafford on April 13.
