Mamelodi Sundowns, River Plate, Al Ahly 12 others exit Club World Cup

The ongoing FIFA Club World Cup in the United States has seen a wave of exits, with 15 teams, including heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns, River Plate, and Al Ahly, bowing out of the tournament following the latest group stage fixtures played on Wednesday and early Thursday.

South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Argentina’s River Plate were the latest to crash out after concluding their final group stage games.

Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a goalless stalemate by Fluminense, a result that left them third in Group F.

Mamelodi Sundowns played a 0-0 draw with Fluminense to finish in third place in Group F. The result meant the South African side fell short of advancing.

The South African club had needed a win against Fluminense to qualify for the Round of 16.

Meanwhile, River Plate’s hopes were dashed after a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Inter Milan.

Rivers Plate, on the other hand, lost 2-0 against Inter Milan to finish in third position in Group E.

The Argentine outfit came into the match needing nothing less than a victory. The Argentina club had needed a win against the Serie A side to progress to the knockout stage.

Other clubs that have exited the competition include continental giants Al Ahly, as well as Los Angeles FC, Auckland City, Pachuca, Ulsan HD, Urawa Red Diamonds, Esperance, and Boca Juniors.

The list of eliminated teams is completed by FC Porto, Al Ain, Wydad AC, Atletico Madrid, and Seattle Sounders.
