Makinde names 11-member committee for Oyo at 50 celebration

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved the constitution of an 11-member committee to plan and coordinate activities marking the 50th anniversary of the state’s creation.

The committee is chaired by a former member of the House of Representatives, Saheed Fijabi, while a former Head of Service, Mrs. Ololade Agboola, was named as the deputy chairperson.

Makinde’s approval was conveyed in a letter signed by his Chief of Staff, Segun Ogunwuyi, and made available to journalists in Ibadan on Monday.

According to the statement, other members of the committee include Z.O. Ajuwon, Mustapha Areo, Fatimah Azeez, S.A. Adejumo, John Alabi, A.K. Bello, Ronke Adedayo (Secretary), Fatai Owoseni, and Samuel Badejo, who serves as the Director General of Protocol.

“The constitution of this committee takes effect immediately,” the statement read in part.

Governor Makinde explained that the move was aimed at ensuring a befitting golden jubilee celebration that reflects the achievements, resilience, and vision of the people of Oyo State.

“Oyo State has come a long way in 50 years, and this milestone calls for reflection and celebration,” Makinde was quoted as saying. “The committee’s task is to coordinate activities that will showcase our collective progress, cultural heritage, and development as a state.”

Oyo State was created on February 3, 1976, by the military government of the late General Murtala Mohammed. It was carved out of the old Western State to bring governance closer to the people and promote balanced regional development.

Initially, the state included the present-day Osun State, which was later separated in August 1991 during the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida.

Over the past five decades, Oyo has evolved from a largely agrarian and educational hub into a centre of commerce, politics, and cultural innovation in Nigeria’s South-West.
