Makinde approves contributory pension scheme for Oyo State workers

The Oyo State Government has approved the immediate commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) for workers in the state, with implementation officially scheduled to begin on July 1, 2026.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, following an announcement by the Chairman of the Oyo State Pensions Board, Tunji Adekunle.

According to the statement, Adekunle conveyed the governor’s approval through a circular issued via the Permanent Secretary, Post Service Board, Rev. Adekunle Victor Adesola, addressed to Ministries, Departments and Agencies across the state.

He explained that the scheme would cover employees who joined the state civil or public service from January 1, 2025.

“The scheme will apply to officers employed into the service of Oyo State with effect from January 1, 2025, while the Contributory Pension Scheme will officially commence on July 1, 2026,” Adekunle said.

Under the arrangement, the pension contribution will be shared between the government and workers, with the state contributing 12 percent and employees contributing eight percent of their monthly salaries.

Adekunle added that the state government would settle accrued pension benefits for affected workers once the scheme becomes operational.

He also directed all MDAs to submit comprehensive details of staff recruited from January 1, 2025, to the Pensions Board in both hard and soft copies.

“All submissions are to be made in both hard and soft copies to the Board,” he stated.

To improve coordination, each MDA is expected to appoint a Pension Desk Officer who will serve as a liaison between the agency and the Pensions Board. The officer’s details, including name, designation, grade level, contact information, and email address, are to be submitted as part of the process.

“This measure is aimed at facilitating effective coordination, capacity building, accountability and the seamless processing of all matters relating to the Contributory Pension Scheme,” Adekunle added.

The state government has set Monday, June 22, 2026, as the deadline for submission of all required documentation.
