The lawmaker representing Surulere 1 Constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliott, has emphasized the importance of active civic participation, stating that it is unfair for individuals to expect government assistance without engaging in the democratic process, especially by voting.

Elliott, who made this known shortly after casting his ballot at Onitolo Nursery/Primary School, Unit 009 in Surulere, Lagos, spoke during the ongoing local government elections organized by the Lagos State Government.

The elections cover chairmanship and councillorship seats in the state’s 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas.

“You can’t sit at home and later come to seek help from people who sacrificed to vote others into power,” the Nollywood actor-turned-legislator said.

Assessing the turnout, Elliott described it as slightly low but remained optimistic that more voters would turn out as the day unfolded.

He pointed out that local government elections deserve greater attention than presidential polls, given their direct influence on residents’ daily lives.

“Development begins at the grassroots level. With powers and revenue now devolved to local governments, this election holds significant importance,” he explained.

“The outcome of this election will have a direct impact on the lives of citizens, making it crucial for voters to exercise their franchise wisely and elect leaders who will prioritise their needs and drive development in their areas,” he added.

Elliott further urged for more public engagement around the role of local government councils, underlining their responsibility in delivering essential services such as primary healthcare, market administration, and maintenance of community roads.
