The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency has sealed several facilities, including religious centres, in the Agege and Mushin areas of Lagos State for persistent violations of environmental regulations, particularly noise pollution.
The enforcement exercise was carried out on Tuesday following repeated warnings, abatement notices and opportunities granted to the affected facilities to comply with the agency’s directives.
LASEPA said the exercise was conducted in line with the Lagos State Government’s directive to ensure strict adherence to environmental laws, protect public health and promote a cleaner, healthier and safer environment for residents.
The agency said, “The affected facilities were found to have contravened various environmental regulations and failed to implement corrective measures issued by the Agency.”
In Mushin, Akorohunfayo Central Mosque, located on Akorohunfayo Street, Fadeyi, was sealed for noise pollution.
Also affected was Holy Temple of Christ on Ayetoro Street, behind NIPCO Filling Station, Mushin, which was sealed over noise pollution.
Christ Covenant Gospel Church, Western District, along Ikorodu Road, Fadeyi, was equally sealed for noise pollution, while Christ Apostolic Church (Oye Iyanu), located on Mushin Road, Church Bus Stop, Itire, was shut for the same violation.
Explaining the rationale behind the enforcement, LASEPA said the action was necessary because the facilities had continued to violate environmental regulations despite previous interventions.
The agency stated that the enforcement was aimed at ensuring compliance with environmental laws and safeguarding residents from activities capable of negatively affecting their health and wellbeing.
LASEPA urged operators of establishments across the state to comply with environmental regulations and implement corrective measures whenever violations are identified.
The agency warned that establishments that disregard environmental regulations despite repeated warnings and abatement notices would be subject to enforcement action.
