A Lagos-based man has been taken into police custody after he allegedly brutalized his wife just four days after she gave birth to their child.
The disturbing incident, which has sparked outrage online, was first brought to public attention by actress and activist Omosalewa Fafowora.
According to Fafowora, the suspect viciously assaulted his wife in the presence of her mother, leading the new mother to lose consciousness.
“He beat her mercilessly until she passed out, right there in front of her own mother,” Fafowora wrote in an emotional post. “This is a woman who just went through childbirth, and now she’s fighting for her life.”
A video shared by the actress captured the moment police officers arrived at the couple’s home to arrest the alleged perpetrator.
In the footage, an elderly woman, reportedly the victim’s mother, is seen cradling the newborn baby, while officers interrogated and handcuffed the suspect.
One officer is heard saying, “She’s on oxygen at the hospital. We can’t ignore something this serious.”
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect is now in custody and that investigations are ongoing.
“The safety of survivors is our top priority,” a DSVA representative said. “No woman should suffer violence, especially after the miracle of childbirth.”
The victim remains hospitalized and is currently receiving intensive medical care.
Concerned Nigerians and advocacy groups have called for justice and stronger protection laws for women and mothers.
