The Chairman of Otto-Awori Local Council Development Area in Lagos State, Prince Musbau Ashafa, has died, leaving the local chapter of the All Progressives Congress in mourning.
The royal scion of Ijanikin kingdom passed away on Friday after battling an undisclosed illness for several months.
Reports indicate Ashafa had not been seen in public for some time, with most council activities being handled by his Chief of Staff and younger brother, Waliu Ashafa.
The late chairman was serving his second term in office, having previously served as APC chairman in Otto-Awori LCDA. Ashafa first rose to political prominence in 1997 during General Sani Abacha’s military regime when he was elected Chairman of the old Ojo Local Government in a zero-party election.
His political career spanned decades in Ojo’s political landscape, culminating in his leadership roles within the APC and eventual election as council chairman.
This tragic loss marks the fourth council chairman Lagos APC has lost within twelve months. The previous casualties include Onigbongbo LCDA Chairman Oladotun Olakanle who died in November 2024, Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA Chairman Mrs. Bola Shobowale who passed in March 2025 after prolonged illness, and former Ifako-Ijaiye LG Chairman Toba Oke who died in February 2025 after battling terminal illness.
Mrs. Shobowale’s case was particularly notable as health complications had kept her away from office for nearly a year before her passing. The string of deaths has left Lagos political circles reeling, with many mourning the loss of experienced local administrators.
As the Otto-Awori community comes to terms with Ashafa’s passing, tributes have poured in from political associates, traditional leaders and constituents who remember his decades of service.
The council has begun transition processes while residents await official announcements regarding funeral arrangements and succession plans for the vacant chairman position.
The late Prince Ashafa’s legacy includes his role in developing Otto-Awori LCDA and his steadfast commitment to the APC’s growth in Lagos West.
