The National Orientation Agency in Kwara State has issued a public alert regarding the circulation of counterfeit N1000 notes in the state.
State Director Alhaji Abdulganiyu Dare made the disclosure in a statement released in Ilorin, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance among residents and business operators.
Dare revealed that confirmed intelligence reports indicate criminal syndicates are flooding the state with fake currency bearing batch numbers 364232 and 898248. He explained that these counterfeit notes can be identified by their blurred portraits, unclear watermarks, and irregular security features. The director specifically warned the public to exercise caution when handling large cash transactions.
“The syndicates behind this crime exploit peak commercial hours in major local markets to carry out transactions with counterfeit notes,” Dare stated. “They target unsuspecting POS operators and merchants by defrauding them of their hard-earned money.”
The NOA director outlined the agency’s commitment to public awareness, saying, “NOA Kwara Directorate is committed to sensitising the public on the dangers of fake currency and the importance of verifying the authenticity of banknotes. The agency is working tirelessly to ensure that residents of Kwara are protected from financial scams.”
Dare condemned the criminal activity as both unpatriotic and potentially damaging to the national economy, pledging that NOA would collaborate with security agencies to apprehend those responsible. He urged residents to immediately report any suspicious financial transactions or individuals to law enforcement authorities.
The director concluded with a call for collective action, stating, “Together, we can build a safer and more secure financial environment for all residents of Kwara. By working together, the NOA and the public can prevent the circulation of fake currency and protect the financial interests of Kwara residents.”
