Kenya’s President, William Ruto, has declared seven days of national mourning following the death of opposition leader Raila Odinga on Wednesday.
The President also announced that a state funeral would be held in honour of the veteran politician, whose passing has plunged the nation into grief.
In a statement released from State House, Ruto paid glowing tribute to the late Odinga, describing him as “Kenya’s foremost statesman and one of Africa’s greatest sons… a giant of democracy, a fearless freedom fighter and a tireless warrior of good governance.”
The President acknowledged Odinga’s immense contributions to Kenya’s political evolution, noting that his courage and resilience helped shape the nation’s democratic journey.
He added that Odinga’s legacy would continue to inspire generations of Africans committed to justice, freedom, and unity.
As part of the mourning period, Ruto said all flags across the country would fly at half-mast in honour of the deceased opposition leader.
Government offices, public institutions, and foreign missions have also been directed to observe the national tribute.
Ruto further announced that he would suspend all his public engagements in the coming days “as a mark of respect” for Odinga.
He urged Kenyans to come together in solidarity, reflecting on the life and service of a man he described as one of the country’s most enduring patriots.
