The Kebbi State Government has declared Friday, June 27, 2025, as a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year 1447 AH.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Thursday by Malami A. Maiyama, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Establishment, Pension and Training.

The statement explained that the holiday is intended to enable public servants and residents to observe the commencement of the new Islamic calendar year.

“Public servants are to observe the holiday in celebration of the commencement of Islamic New Year 1447. However, normal work will resume on Monday, June 30, 2025,” the statement read.

The state government directed all organizations operating within Kebbi to comply with the holiday declaration. The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year, marks the beginning of the lunar calendar used in Islam and commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina.

This declaration follows the tradition of several northern states in Nigeria that typically observe the Islamic New Year as a public holiday. The holiday provides Muslim faithful in Kebbi State an opportunity for religious reflection and celebration of the new year.
