Kano, Jigawa customs rake N63.07bn revenue in six months

The Kano/Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service generated N63.07 billion in revenue between January and June 2026, recording a 7.4 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2025.

The Acting Area Controller of the command, Usman Umar Adamu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the command’s half-year performance at the Customs House in Bompai, Kano.

According to him, the command outperformed the N58.3 billion realised during the corresponding period in 2025 by approximately N4.6 billion, despite a reduction in cargo throughput.

“The command generated N63.07 billion between January and June 2026. This surpassed the N58.3 billion realised during the corresponding period of 2025 by about N4.6 billion, representing a growth of approximately 7.4 per cent, despite the decline in cargo throughput,” Adamu said.

He also revealed that the Kano Free Trade Zone generated more than N26 billion within the first six months of the year, exceeding the total revenue recorded by the zone throughout 2025 by about N4 billion.

“The Kano Free Trade Zone generated over N26 billion during the first half of 2026, which is about N4 billion higher than the total revenue generated by the zone from January to December 2025,” he added.

Adamu further stated that the command recovered nearly N3 billion through efforts to curb the abuse of transit procedures during the review period.

He said Customs officers intercepted 14 containers linked to the diversion and misuse of transit procedures, describing the action as part of intensified enforcement operations.

“The command intercepted 14 forty-foot transit containers involved in diversion and abuse of transit procedures in violation of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023,” he said.

The Acting Controller attributed the achievements to intelligence-led operations and stronger collaboration with other security agencies aimed at protecting the nation’s economy and preventing the importation of prohibited and restricted goods.

He noted that the operations resulted in several seizures, including smuggled vehicles, truck heads, foreign spaghetti, macaroni, parboiled rice, vegetable oil, and counterfeit packaging materials for agrochemicals and inscticides.

According to him, 22 suspects were arrested in connection with the seizures.

“Some of the suspects have been handed over to the relevant security and regulatory agencies for further investigation, while others are on administrative bail,” Adamu stated.

He added that the seized items had a Duty Paid Value of N1.7 billion.

Adamu urged traders and other stakeholders to comply with government fiscal and trade regulations as the country enters the second half of the year.

“We remain committed to facilitating legitimate trade, protecting our nation’s economy and generating revenue for national development,” he said.
