Iwobi backs England to win 2026 World Cup title

Super Eagles and Fulham midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has backed England national football team to win the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the depth and quality in their squad could carry them all the way.

Iwobi is not featuring at the tournament after Nigeria national football team failed to qualify, falling short in both the group stage and playoff rounds.

England national football team began their World Cup campaign on a strong note with a 4-2 victory over Croatia national football team, with captain Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford among the goals.

Under manager Thomas Tuchel, England will next face Ghana national football team on Tuesday in Boston, with a win set to secure qualification for the knockout stages.

The Three Lions are widely expected to progress comfortably from Group L, which also includes Panama national football team and Croatia, whom they have already defeated.

Iwobi, who previously represented England at U-16, U-17 and U-18 levels before switching allegiance to Nigeria, believes England possess the quality, depth and star power to win their first World Cup since 1966.

“I personally believe England have a great chance of winning the World Cup,” the Fulham midfielder told Sky Sports Football.

“They’ve got so many stars in the team and so much ability. Even the players who are not starting can come off the bench and hurt the opposition.”

Despite backing England, Iwobi also identified France national football team as serious contenders, praising their attacking strength and overall balance.

“So, I’ll say England, but I also believe France are strong contenders. The attacking threat that France have is scary, but I actually hope England wins it.”

Elsewhere, defending champions Argentina national football team, along with Spain national football team and Germany national football team, are also among the favourites after strong performances in the tournament so far.
