Inter beat Como 4–3, close in on Serie A title

Inter Milan moved nine points clear at the summit of Serie A after producing a stunning comeback from 2-0 down to defeat Como 4-3, extending their dominance in the fixture to 11 consecutive top-flight head-to-head wins.

The Nerazzurri travelled north aiming to strengthen their grip on the Scudetto race, especially after Napoli were held to a draw by Parma earlier on Sunday.

However, Como, chasing a historic first-ever UEFA Champions League qualification, started brightly and repeatedly threatened early on, with Denzel Dumfries and Francesco Acerbi making crucial last-ditch interventions to deny efforts from Anastasios Douvikas and Alex Valle.

The pressure eventually told as the home crowd at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia erupted in the 36th minute when Valle opened the scoring.

The full-back netted his first senior goal, reacting quickly to a loose ball after Yann Sommer had parried Nico Paz’s initial attempt straight into his path.

Como doubled their advantage just before the break through Paz, who latched onto a long pass from Jean Butez, controlled it confidently, and unleashed a superb left-footed strike that went in off the post.

Despite the setback, Inter struck back just before half-time when Marcus Thuram reduced the deficit with a clever improvised first-time finish from a Nicolo Barella cross.

The visitors completed their turnaround almost immediately after the restart, with Thuram scoring again four minutes into the second half.

Once more, Barella provided the assist, threading a precise pass through for the French striker, who calmly lifted the ball over an onrushing Butez outside his area.

Inter completed the comeback in the 58th minute when Denzel Dumfries headed in from Hakan Calhanoglu’s free-kick at the far post, reinforcing their status as title contenders.

Como continued to push forward, and Sommer was forced into action again to push away a difficult set-piece from Paz.

However, Inter delivered the decisive blow shortly after. Manuel Akanji controlled Calhanoglu’s delivery before allowing Dumfries to smash home his second goal of the night, sealing all three points for Cristian Chivu’s side.

The hosts did manage a late consolation when Lucas Da Cunha converted from the spot, after Ange-Yoan Bonny was penalised for a foul on Paz.

The result underlined Inter’s strong momentum in the title race, marking their 10th win in 12 away league matches and strengthening their push for a 21st Serie A crown.

For Como, the defeat ended an eight-game unbeaten run across all competitions (W5, D3) and denied them a chance to climb into the top four, as they slipped to a sixth league loss of the season.
