The Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun Corps, has stepped up patrols in boarding schools across the state following reports of security breaches and kidnappings.
Commander of the Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this on Tuesday in Akure while parading 16 suspects arrested for various offenses.
“We have visited numerous schools over the past week and mounted surveillance on all institutions with boarding facilities, particularly those in border towns and the outskirts,” Adeleye said.
He added that the agency’s 24-hour “Ember Month” patrol has also been intensified and extended to border communities under the operation dubbed Operation Le Won Jade, which began on November 6.
“This ongoing patrol has successfully driven away bandits, miscreants, and kidnappers from forested areas,” he said.
Adeleye further highlighted the success of the metropolis patrol, noting, “Our regular 24-hour patrol within the city continues, yielding significant results. Over the last week, 34 arrests were made, and we are parading 16 of the suspects today.”
The Amotekun Commander reassured residents that the safety of lives and property in Ondo State remains a top priority.
The move comes in the wake of recent violent inidents targeting schools in Nigeria.
On November 17, gunmen attacked a secondary school in Kebbi State, abducting 25 girls and killing the vice-principal. Just days later, armed bandits raided St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Niger State, abducting 303 students and 12 teachers. About 50 students later escaped and reunited with their families.
Adeleye concluded, “We want the public to know that all security agencies are committed to ensuring safety in Ondo State. Parents and guardians can rest assured that schools with boarding facilities are being closely monitored.”
