The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has expressed concerns regarding the wage increase demands put forth by organized labor unions.

Speaking on Thursday in Abuja during a meeting with the National Executive Council of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Akume articulated his position on the matter.

George Akume, who previously served as the Governor of Benue State, appealed to the Christian community for their support as the tripartite committee on minimum wage continues its negotiations.

He highlighted the financial difficulties that would accompany a significant wage increase, specifically referencing the proposed minimum wage of N100,000.

“I can’t afford to pay my driver one hundred thousand because they are four,” Akume lamented. He pointed out the impracticality of the wage demands, asking, “Where do we get that money from?”

In addition to addressing the wage issue, Akume criticized the actions of the organized labor during their recent nationwide strike, stating that they had committed treason by shutting down the national grid.
