Tension mounted at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja, on Monday as a large number of armed police officers took positions around the premises ahead of the party’s National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for later today.
According to The PUNCH, eyewitnesses reported that the police had cordoned off Dalaba Street, the main access road to the secretariat, causing unease among party members and staff. The heightened security reportedly raised concerns about the party’s ability to proceed with its internal meetings without interference.
According to a PDP official who requested anonymity, the deployment was a strategic move to block a proposed Expanded Caucus Meeting from holding at the venue.
“The presence of the police is clearly meant to stop the Expanded Caucus Meeting that was planned ahead of the NEC session,” the source told Channels Television.
Despite the security barricade, some party staff were permitted to enter the building without incident, though the exact motive behind the deployment remains unclear.
As of press time, there has been no official statement from the Nigeria Police Force regarding the development.
The move comes amid reports of internal wrangling and high-level consultations within the PDP, as the party prepares to take major decisions that could shape its future ahead of the 2027 general elections.
