The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to empowering women and promoting gender equality in the state.
Fubara made the declaration in a goodwill message to mark the International Women’s Day celebration, where he commended the contributions of women to the development of Rivers State, Nigeria and the global community.
The message was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Onwuka Nzeshi.
The governor praised the resilience and determination of women, noting their critical role in societal growth and progress.
He said, “As governor, I’m proud to stand in solidarity with our women, recognising their pivotal role in shaping our society.”
Fubara also applauded the dedication of women in their various roles within families, communities and workplaces.
“To the women of Rivers State, your tireless efforts in our communities, workplaces, and homes inspire us all. Your courage and determination drive progress and prosperity,” he said.
He urged stakeholders to continue creating opportunities that enable women to thrive and realise their full potential.
“As we mark International Women’s Day, let’s reaffirm our commitment to empowering women and promoting gender equality. Let’s create opportunities for women to thrive and reach their full potential,” the governor added.
The statement highlighted some initiatives undertaken by the state government to promote women’s development and inclusion in leadership.
According to the governor’s media aide, the administration has appointed women to key positions and supported programmes aimed at improving women’s economic opportunities.
It noted that the Women Economic Empowerment Programme had provided 1,000 women with grants of N50,000 each to support their businesses.
The statement also revealed that the governor’s wife, Valerie Fubara, supported women farmers with N10m distributed among 20 beneficiaries under the Renewed Hope Initiative Women Agricultural Support Programme.
The state government has also collaborated with the National Directorate of Employment to provide jobs and empowerment opportunities for women and youths across Rivers State.
International Women’s Day is marked annually on March 8 to celebrate the achievements of women and highlight issues affecting them globally, including gender equality, equal opportunities, and protection from discrimination and violence.
