IWD 2026: ADC reserves 40% of party positions for women

The African Democratic Congress has reaffirmed its commitment to gender inclusion, announcing that 40 per cent of leadership positions within the party have been reserved for women at all levels.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day.

Abdullahi said the party recognises the vital role women play in nation-building and stressed that their participation in leadership is essential for national development.

According to him, “Any political movement that truly seeks progress must acknowledge and harness the strength, resilience and leadership potential of women.”
He noted that the party’s constitution deliberately ensures women are adequately represented in its structures.

“The ADC remains the only political party in Nigeria whose constitution reserves 40 per cent of all party positions, at every level, for women,” Abdullahi stated.

He explained that the composition of the party’s National Working Committee reflects this commitment, adding that the party intends to move women from the margins of political participation to the centre of decision-making.

Abdullahi also highlighted the significant contributions of Nigerian women to the country’s social and economic development, despite their limited presence in key leadership positions.

“Nigerian women shoulder a disproportionate share of responsibilities within families, communities and workplaces, yet they remain underrepresented in many critical national institutions,” he said.

He emphasised that empowering women politically and economically is vital to strengthening democracy and ensuring inclusive governance.

“Empowering women politically and economically remains essential to building a stronger democracy and promoting sustainable national development,” Abdullahi added.

The ADC spokesman further stated that the party is determined to change the narrative by ensuring women are fully integrated into its leadership structure.

“In the ADC, women are leaders and part of the structures that shape the party’s decisions,” he said.
