Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is scheduled to visit Abia State on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, as part of efforts to promote the state’s rich cultural heritage through the renowned Akwete weaving tradition.
The visit will see the First Lady hosted by Governor Alex Otti and the First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, according to a statement issued on Monday by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu.
As part of the itinerary, Tinubu is expected to tour the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society in Akwete, Ukwa East Local Government Area, where she will engage with local artisans and observe the traditional weaving process that has earned Akwete textiles international recognition.
Kanu said, “During the visit, Senator Tinubu will interact with master weavers and witness first-hand the craftsmanship that has made Akwete textiles globally recognised.”
Following the inspection, the First Lady and Governor Otti are expected to attend a civic reception at the Akwete Central School Field, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
According to the commissioner, “The reception is aimed at celebrating the historic visit and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Akwete to the nation.”
He added that the event is expected to attract government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, women and youth groups, other stakeholders, and residents from across the state.
Kanu also called on residents of Ukwa East and neighbouring communities to turn out in large numbers to welcome the First Lady.
Akwete cloth, which has been handwoven for centuries in Ukwa East Local Government Area, remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated indigenous textiles and serves as a major source of livelihood for many women in the community.
