Fire guts part of Abuja plaza

A fire broke out at Leventis Plaza in Abuja on Sunday, destroying a tailoring workshop on the first floor of the commercial complex, authorities said.

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) said the blaze was suspected to have been triggered by an electrical surge.

In a statement, FFS spokesperson Paul Abraham confirmed that firefighters acted swiftly to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to neighboring businesses, including Grand Square, The Palm Hotels, and Frazier’s Suites.

“Upon receiving the emergency call, our Special Unit firefighters were dispatched from the National Headquarters and arrived within five minutes,” Abraham said.

“Their prompt action prevented the fire from affecting the wider plaza and nearby commercial structures.”

He added that the intervention saved property worth approximately ₦900 million out of an estimated ₦1 billion.

“Firefighters conducted thorough salvage and inspection operations. We urge citizens to exercise caution with electrical installations to prevent similar incidents,” he said.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns over fire outbreaks in Abuja’s commercial buildings, often linked to electrical faults and poor maintenance.
