FG vows stronger border security, better welfare for military veterans

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering border security, improving the welfare of military veterans, and reviewing key defence policies to strengthen Nigeria’s national security framework against emerging threats.

The Minister of Defence, Retired Gen. Christopher Musa, made this statement while receiving members of the Alumni Association of the National Defence College in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by Enderline Chukwu, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence, on Tuesday in Abuja, Musa emphasised the fluid and increasingly complex nature of Nigeria’s security environment, highlighting the need for regular review of defence frameworks.

He stressed that foundational documents, including the National Defence Policy (2017) and its Implementation Guidelines (2019), must be updated to align with evolving realities in both domestic and global security contexts.

“Life is dynamic, and our security challenges are not static. Our Armed Forces and institutional frameworks must continuously adapt to stay ahead of emerging threats,” Musa said.

The minister noted that the ministry would collaborate with key authorities, such as the Permanent Secretary and other strategic stakeholders, to begin structured engagements aimed at reviewing critical defence policies and related instruments.

On the subject of border security, Musa described effective management of the nation’s borders as a core element of Nigeria’s security strategy.

He called for enhanced surveillance systems and better coordination among relevant agencies to monitor movements in and out of the country.

“It is important that we know who is coming in, who is going out and what is entering our country. Strengthening border control will significantly curb transnational crimes and other forms of insecurity,” he said.

Musa also highlighted the need to prioritise the welfare of military veterans, emphasising that personnel who have served the country with distinction deserve continued post-service care.

The minister revealed that the ministry is reviewing current frameworks to improve access to healthcare, welfare benefits, and overall support systems for retired personnel, in line with global best practices.

Earlier, the President of AANDEC, retired Rear Adm. Patrick Agholor, praised the minister for his leadership and hospitality.

Agholor noted that the association, which includes senior military officers and strategic-level experts, has the capacity to support the Ministry of Defence through research, advisory services, and high-level policy engagement.

He appealed for the ministry’s assistance in strengthening AANDEC’s operational capabilities, including logistics, office infrastructure, and preparations for a forthcoming National Security Summit.

Agholor reaffirmed the association’s commitment to working with the ministry to deepen strategic thinking and implement institutional reforms to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

The meeting also featured the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwa, along with other senior officials.
