FG unveils free TV platform for digital switch project

The Federal Government on Wednesday officially launched Nigeria’s Digital Switch Over Platform, describing it as a transformative initiative aimed at modernising the nation’s broadcasting industry and driving economic growth.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, unveiled the platform at the headquarters of the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited in Abuja, where he highlighted the far-reaching benefits of the project for the media sector and the wider economy.

According to Idris, the successful implementation of the DSO programme will stimulate job creation, strengthen local content production, support indigenous manufacturing and expand opportunities within the creative industry.

“A fully implemented DSO ecosystem will create jobs, stimulate local manufacturing, expand audience reach, strengthen content production, increase advertising opportunities, and unlock new revenue streams for broadcasters and content creators,” he said.

The minister described the launch as a landmark achievement in Nigeria’s broadcasting landscape and said it demonstrates the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to advancing digital transformation, innovation and critical infrastructure development.

He stressed, “The Digital Switch Over project is not simply a technological transition, it is a critical step towards modernising the country’s broadcasting industry.”

Idris attributed the progress made on the project to the support and leadership of President Tinubu, noting that the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda prioritises digital innovation and economic expansion.

“This launch is not merely a broadcasting milestone; it is part of a broader national effort by the Federal Government to build a more connected, more competitive, and more prosperous Nigeria,” he stated.

The minister disclosed that stakeholders across the broadcasting industry met a day before the launch to discuss implementation strategies and reaffirm their support for the programme. Participants included broadcasters, signal distributors, content producers, set-top box manufacturers, NIGCOMSAT, DigiTeam, the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria and other key industry players.

According to him, the consultations revealed a shared commitment among stakeholders despite differences in opinion on certain implementation issues.

“One important message emerged clearly from that engagement: all stakeholders remain united in their commitment to the successful implementation of the Digital Switch Over programme in Nigeria”, he said.

Idris explained that the DSO initiative is designed to broaden access to digital broadcasting rather than simply replace existing technologies.

He noted that the government is adopting a hybrid approach that integrates multiple transmission platforms.

“Digital Terrestrial Television remains an integral component of Nigeria’s digital broadcasting framework. What we are pursuing is a hybrid broadcasting model that combines DTT, Direct-to-Home satellite delivery, and digital application-based platforms,” he added.

He further reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to supporting local innovation and ensuring Nigerian businesses benefit from the project.

“The DSO must create opportunities for Nigerian businesses, Nigerian innovators, and Nigerian workers.”

The minister also commended NIGCOMSAT, the National Broadcasting Commission, BON, ARCON, DigiTeam and other stakeholders for their contributions, describing the launch as the beginning of a new chapter for broadcasting in the country.

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, said the DSO project represents a key milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda and aligns with the Tinubu administration’s vision for economic growth.

“The DSO is one of the first visible outcomes of our broader digital infrastructure strategy aimed at building a one-trillion-dollar economy,” he said.

Tijani disclosed that the government is moving ahead with plans to deploy 90,000 kilometres of fibre-optic infrastructure nationwide.

He also revealed that President Tinubu has approved the launch of two additional satellites to enhance the country’s communications capabilities.

In their separate remarks, the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Charles Ebuebu, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NIGCOMSAT Limited, Jane Egerton-Idehen, described the initiative as a game-changer for Nigeria’s broadcasting sector.

“This is more than a television platform; it is a national communications architecture designed to expand access to information, education and digital opportunities for all Nigerians,” Ebuebu said.

Egerton-Idehen said the satellite-powered platform would help bridge connectivity gaps while creating fresh opportunities across the creative and digital economy.

“It creates new opportunities for content creators, broadcasters, manufacturers, investors and technology providers, while strengthening Nigeria’s position as Africa’s leading digital broadcasting ecosystem,” Idehen stated.

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, who attended as Special Guest of Honour, described the launch as a major achievement that underscores the value of collaboration between government and industry stakeholders.

“This initiative will expand access to quality broadcasting services, create jobs, stimulate investment and unlock new opportunities across the media and creative sectors,” he said.

Kalu added that the successful rollout of the DSO platform reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to digital transformation and supports efforts to build a more competitive and prosperous economy.

The event attracted top government officials and industry leaders, including Permanent Secretaries from the Ministries of Information and Communications, heads of key broadcasting agencies, and representatives of organisations across Nigeria’s broadcasting and communications sectors.
