The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the first phase of the dualisation of the Akure-Ita Ogbolu-Iju-Ikere road by December 2025.
The Federal Controller of Works in Ondo State,Engr. Olajide Hussein disclosed this in Akure during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.
According to him, the project will be inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu once completed.
“The 15-kilometre stretch making up Phase 1 of the Akure to Ekiti boundary road is progressing well, and we are confident it will be ready for commissioning by December,” Hussein said.
The road, which spans a total length of 18.438 kilometres from Akure in Ondo State to Ikere in Ekiti State, is being executed in phases. Hussein explained that this phased approach is to ensure minimal disruption to traffic flow.
“It is the policy of the Federal Ministry of Works to construct one lane first during dualisation projects, so that road users can continue to move freely on the existing lane while the other is under construction,” he noted.
The ongoing Phase 1 is valued at N19 billion, while Phase 2 is projected to cost N23 billion.
While lauding the efforts of the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, Hussein credited his dedication for the steady progress being recorded. “The Minister has shown great resilience and commitment to making sure the project is delivered on schedule,” he added.
He also acknowledged challenges faced during the construction process, especially the issue of obstructing structures. However, he praised residents and state authorities for cooperating with the contractors.
“We encountered some temporary and permanent buildings along the route, but with the support of the state governments and affected property owners, those obstacles have been cleared,” Hussein stated.
The dualisation of the Akure-Ikere road is expected to improve connectivity between Ondo and Ekiti states, easing traffic and fostering economic growth in the region.
