FG pays N3.9bn pension arrears to over 91,000 retirees

The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate has disbursed N3.9bn in outstanding pension arrears to 91,146 retirees under the Federal Government’s Defined Benefit Scheme.

The confirmation was made on Friday in Abuja through a statement issued by PTAD’s Head of Corporate Communications, Olugbenga Ajayi.

Ajayi explained that the payment forms part of the N32,000 pension increase earlier approved by President Bola Tinubu to enhance the welfare of retirees.

According to him, “N1.9bn has been paid to 59,865 pensioners under the Parastatals Pension Department; N830m to 12,976 retirees in the Civil Service Pension Department; and N620m to 9,689 pensioners in the Police Pension Department.”

He added that “another N551m was disbursed to 8,616 pensioners in the Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Prisons Pension Department.”

The Executive Secretary of PTAD, Tolulope Odunaiya, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to clearing all outstanding obligations, noting that the disbursement aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Odunaiya said, “The Federal Government remains committed to improving the welfare of our senior citizens. Settling arrears and ensuring timely payments are key priorities for us.”

PTAD earlier announced that the full implementation of the new pension structure for DBS pensioners would take effect from the September 2025 payroll cycle. The increment package comprises a fixed N32,000 addition and percentage increases of 10.66% and 12.95%, expected to benefit over 832,000 retirees.
