The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on Friday in a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and those in the diaspora, urging citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
He particularly highlighted compassion, humility and service to others as values that Nigerians could embrace in promoting peaceful coexistence.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said.
He added, “These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”
The minister also called on Nigerians to pray for peace and stronger national unity, stressing that building a cohesive country required the collective effort of all citizens.
He urged Nigerians celebrating the occasion to do so peacefully and responsibly, while encouraging mutual respect among people of different faiths.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and sustaining peace across the country.
He wished the Muslim community a peaceful and joyous Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
