FG cancels Independence Day parade

The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the annual Independence Day parade earlier scheduled for Wednesday, October 1, 2025, to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

A statement issued on Monday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, confirmed the development.

Although the statement did not disclose the reason behind the cancellation, it emphasized that the move would not undermine the significance of the nation’s milestone celebration.

“The Federal Government wishes to announce the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade, previously scheduled to mark the 65th Independence on Wednesday, October 1,” Imohiosen said.

He added that the government remained “committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm,” stressing that all other events lined up under the theme Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation would go ahead as planned.

The release further appealed for public understanding and support. “The Government deeply regrets any inconvenience caused by this cancellation.

The Federal Government appreciates the understanding, support and cooperation of all Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests, and urges Nigerians to support the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in making Nigeria a greater nation,” the statement read.

Earlier, the government had declared Wednesday, October 1, a public holiday to mark the Independence Anniversary
