The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has called for patience from motorists and airport users following heavy traffic congestion recorded on Sunday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
The gridlock coincided with the official commencement of FAAN’s nationwide Go Cashless programme, which eliminates cash payments at airport access gates and other service points.
In a statement shared on its official X handle, the authority attributed the delays to a surge of motorists attempting to register for the new Go Cashless cards at the airport gates, despite earlier advisories encouraging advance registration.
“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria sincerely appreciates all motorists and airport users as the Go Cashless Programme officially comes into full operation today at MMIA and NAIA, in line with the Federal Government’s directive on cashless transactions,” the statement read.
FAAN acknowledged the traffic build-up at the access gates, explaining that many drivers opted to complete their card registration on the first day of enforcement.
“Despite wide publicity, notices, and repeated announcements issued ahead of the commencement date, a significant number of motorists chose to register for their Go Cashless cards at the gates this morning,” the authority stated.
To ease the situation, FAAN said it had deployed additional personnel, expanded registration points, and strengthened coordination on the ground to improve traffic flow.
The authority noted that temporary disruptions are common during the early stages of major operational changes.
“We appeal for your patience, understanding, and cooperation as we work diligently to stabilise and streamline the process,” FAAN said, reaffirming its commitment to delivering a safe, efficient, and world-class airport experience.
The Go Cashless initiative, which also applies to car parks and executive lounges, aligns with the cashless policy drive of the Central Bank of Nigeria aimed at promoting digital transactions nationwide.
Piloted in late 2025 in Lagos and Abuja in partnership with Paystack, the programme is designed to enhance transaction speed, improve transparency, and reduce risks associated with handling physical cash.
FAAN advised motorists to obtain their Go Cashless cards at designated commercial offices, airport access gates, or participating bank branches ahead of future trips to avoid delays.
The agency assured the public that ongoing monitoring and necessary adjustments would ensure smoother operations in the coming days.
