Ex-Tennis star Andy Murray eyes Open Golf Championship spot

Former world No.1 tennis star, Andy Murray, has revealed his ambitious plan to swap the baseline for the fairway, with hopes of qualifying for The Open Championship in 2026.

The three-time Grand Slam champion, who has developed a deep love for golf, has spent recent months sharpening his game, cutting his handicap from seven down to two as he pursues scratch-golfer status.

He is also preparing to tee it up at next month’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Speaking on The Chipping Forecast podcast, Murray said his focus has shifted from casual rounds with friends to a more competitive approach, as he aims to test himself in official tournaments.

“I’ve been practicing a lot and now I want to start submitting more scorecards,” Murray explained. “Playing socially is fun, but I don’t think it really pushes you to improve. I’ve always thrived in competition, and that’s where I want to put my energy.”

On the possibility of taking part in The Open, which boasts a £12.5 million prize purse, Murray admitted it would be a dream, “I’d absolutely love to. A few of my friends have had the chance, and I think it’s incredible when athletes cross into different sports. But I’m realistic—I know compared to a professional golfer, I’m still miles off.”
