Former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has reportedly converted to Islam in Doha, Qatar, according to reports from Qatari media.
The 33-year-old Al-Ahli defender was said to have recited the Shahadah, the Islamic profession of faith, in a development that has attracted attention among football fans in Nigeria and beyond.
Troost-Ekong currently plays in the Qatar Stars League following a career that has taken him through several clubs in Europe and Saudi Arabia before his move to the Gulf region.
While the defender has not publicly explained the reasons behind his reported conversion, a video of the ceremony has circulated online, prompting messages of congratulations and support from fans.
The development comes after a memorable period in Troost-Ekong’s international career.
He played a key role in Nigeria’s run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
The defender was named Player of the Tournament after his influential performances for the Super Eagles during the competition.
Troost-Ekong, who has established himself as one of Nigeria’s prominent defenders, now begins what has been described as a new spiritual chapter of his life in Qatar.
