Former England winger, Raheem Sterling, has been charged with dangerous driving and possessing nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation following a car crash on a motorway in Hampshire.
The 31-year-old is due to appear before Basingstoke magistrates on 15 September after his Lamborghini crashed into barriers on the southbound M3, near the Minley Interchange, on 28 May.
Sterling was arrested following the incident and later released on bail while police continued their investigation.
A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesman said, “A driver will appear in court next month to face charges following a collision on the M3.
“Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has been charged for the following offences: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, failing to provide a specimen.
“The charges come following a single vehicle collision, involving a Lamborghini, on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange [Hampshire], on 28 May, 2026.
“No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported. Mr Sterling is due to appear at Basingstoke magistrates court on 15 September.”
Police had initially suspected Sterling of driving while unfit through drugs, although that allegation is not among the charges he now faces.
A source close to Sterling told BBC Sport in May there was “no proof” of drugs in his system.
The source also said the footballer had endured “an extremely tough couple of years” and had been made to “feel worthless” and “forgotten about”.
Sterling has been without a club since his short spell with Dutch side Feyenoord ended at the conclusion of last season. He joined the club in February after leaving Chelsea by mutual consent.
Chelsea signed Sterling from Manchester City for £47.5m in 2022.
During his seven years at City, he won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and one FA Cup.
He subsequently spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Arsenal before returning to Chelsea, where he was excluded from the first-team squad and trained separately.
Sterling won 82 caps for England between 2012 and 2022, representing the country at three World Cups and two European Championships.
