Ex-Chelsea star Kalou backs Super Eagles to win AFCON

Former Ivory Coast international, Salomon Kalou has tipped Nigeria’s Super Eagles as strong contenders to lift the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations trophy.

The three-time AFCON champions narrowly missed out on a fourth title at the last tournament, losing 2–1 to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the final.

However, Kalou believes Nigeria have what it takes to go one step further this time.

Writing in his weekly column on Tribuna, the former Chelsea winger praised the quality and balance in Eric Chelle’s squad, highlighting Victor Osimhen as a key threat.

“Nigeria look very powerful this year. With Osimhen spearheading the attack, they possess one of the most dangerous strikers in world football,” Kalou wrote.

He also pointed to the pace and creativity of Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze, as well as Wilfred Ndidi’s composure in midfield, as reasons for his confidence in the team.

“Nigeria were runners-up last time, and with this blend of talent and experience, they will believe they can go all the way,” he added.

The Super Eagles are drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda. They will begin their AFCON 2025 campaign against Tanzania in Fèz on Tuesday, December 23.
