European bank okays $100m funding for Nigeria’s fiber-optic expansion

World Bank to provide digital ID for 148m Nigerians by 2024 - Report

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has sanctioned a $100 million investment in Nigeria’s Project BRIDGE, the Federal Government’s ambitious fibre-optic expansion initiative.

Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed the development in a post on X, noting that the funding comes on top of the $500 million earlier approved by the World Bank Group for the same project.

“As we conclude the final leg of our Project BRIDGE Investment Tour in Europe this week, following several extremely positive engagements, I am pleased to confirm the formal approval by the Board of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to proceed with a $100 million investment in Project BRIDGE,” the minister posted.

Tijani further revealed that the European Union has pledged a €22 million grant for Project BRIDGE as part of a broader €45 million digital economy support package.

He explained that the larger package allocates €18 million toward strengthening digital public services, while €5 million is earmarked for the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme.

The minister added that the approvals followed a two-week investment drive across six European nations, aimed at forging strategic partnerships to facilitate the rollout of 90,000 kilometres of fibre-optic infrastructure across Nigeria.
