Youri Tielemans stepped off the bench to deliver the decisive moment for Aston Villa, sealing a 2-1 win over Basel in their Europa League clash.
Villa had taken an early lead through Evann Guessand, only for Flavius Daniliuc to haul Basel level before the interval. But Unai Emery’s halftime introduction of Tielemans changed the rhythm of the game, with the Belgian curling home a composed finish just seven minutes into the second half to lift Villa to third in the league phase, level on points with leaders Lyon.
Both sides created chances in a lively opening spell, with Matty Cash and Dominik Schmid threatening at either end. Guessand eventually broke the deadlock on 12 minutes, pouncing inside a packed penalty area after Xherdan Shaqiri failed to clear a corner.
Leo Leroy thought he had extended Villa’s advantage later in the half, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Moments later, Shaqiri redeemed himself by delivering a pinpoint free-kick that Daniliuc nodded past Marco Bizot.
Emery’s decision to sacrifice Cash for Tielemans proved inspired. The Belgian midfielder immediately stamped his authority on the match, bending a low shot into the bottom-right corner to restore Villa’s lead.
Guessand and Jadon Sancho came close to widening the gap for the Premier League side, while Basel’s Metinho sent a late effort over the bar as Villa held firm to secure their eighth straight win in all competitions.
Despite producing just 0.42 expected goals from seven attempts compared to Basel’s 0.83 from 11 shots, Villa found a way through thanks to Tielemans’ clinical display.
The Belgian not only scored the winner but also created a chance, completed 92.3% of his passes (24/26), and won all four of his midfield duels.
Villa’s victory also ended Basel’s impressive 10-match unbeaten home run in the Europa League, making them the first side to win at St. Jakob-Park in the competition since Belenenses in 2015.
