Europa: Sancho fires Astonn Villa to knockouts

Jadon Sancho’s first-half header was enough to send Aston Villa into the Europa League last 16 after a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Fenerbahce in Istanbul.

Unai Emery’s side knew three points would guarantee a top-eight finish in the league phase, and they delivered in difficult, rain-soaked conditions to make it six wins from seven European matches this season.

Sancho struck in the 25th minute, rising to glance home a header after Matty Cash’s cross deflected off Jayden Oosterwolde and dropped invitingly in the box, beating former Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson.

Villa pushed for a second before the break but were denied by superb defending from Milan Skriniar, while Marco Bizot later produced a key save to keep out Anderson Talisca midway through the second half.

Cash rattled the post with a long-range effort as Villa thought they had doubled their lead, only for Ollie Watkins to be flagged offside in the build-up before the ball rebounded off Ismail Yuksek into the net.

Fenerbahce also had a late goal ruled out after VAR intervention, with former Villa forward Jhon Duran adjudged offside before Kerem Akturkoglu’s close-range finish.

Despite limited starts since arriving on loan from Manchester United, Sancho’s goal saw him make history.

He became just the second English player to score in major European competitions for four different clubs — Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa, after Peter Crouch.

Sancho is also one of only three English players, alongside Harry Kane and Phil Foden, to have scored in major European competitions in each of the last eight seasons.

Villa narrowly edged the contest on expected goals, posting an xG of 1.45 compared to Fenerbahce’s 0.89, on a night that also marked a milestone for Emery, who became the first manager to take charge of 100 Europa League matches — a competition he has lifted a record four times.
