The Ekiti State Government has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company to restore electricity supply to the Ago Aduloju community or risk legal action.

In a letter dated August 8, 2025, and jointly signed by the Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utility, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, and the Attorney General, Mr. Dayo Apata (SAN), the government accused BEDC Electricity Ekiti Limited of breaching its obligations by leaving the community in total blackout for three months despite prior agreements.

According to the statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Sunday, the government recalled that parties had reached agreements on May 8, 2025, covering payment of outstanding bills, a repayment schedule, transformer de-bulking for individual prepaid meters, and community contributions for meter purchase and installation.

“BEDC Electricity Ekiti Limited has an obligation to energise the community, being one of its primary responsibilities as a distribution company, coupled with the agreements reached with representatives of the company and the community,” the statement read.

The government expressed frustration that despite several appeals and visits to the company’s headquarters, the electricity supply had not been restored, with BEDC allegedly giving “various untenable reasons” for the delay.

“This persistent refusal to restore power is a clear breach of agreement and duty, causing untold hardship for residents who have endured total blackout for months,” the statement added.

The letter warned that if electricity is not restored within seven days, “we shall have no option but to ventilate our grievances in the court of law.”
