EFCC recovers N853bn crime proceeds, secures over 4,000 convictions

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has announced that it recovered a total of N364.5 billion and $326.5 million from criminal activities between 2023 and 2024.

The anti-graft agency described the recoveries as “unprecedented,” noting that its efforts extended beyond financial fraud to include the monitoring of key government intervention funds such as the PL-CNG scheme, NG-CARES, NACA Global Fund, SESET, AMCON loans, and various Central Bank of Nigeria initiatives, including COVID-19 support packages and conversion loans.

According to EFCC, the same period also saw the commission receive 15,724 petitions, investigate 12,928 cases, file 5,081 suits in court, and secure 4,171 convictions, with 2,348 cases still pending.

“These figures are not just statistics; they represent deterrence, restitution, and a firm declaration that corruption will not be tolerated in Nigeria,” the commission said in a statement.

The EFCC stressed that all recoveries and convictions were achieved under due process and judicial oversight, a practice it said has helped build greater public trust in its operations.

“Our performance demonstrates that the fight against corruption goes far beyond internet fraud. We are safeguarding national assets and ensuring that intervention funds reach the people for whom they are meant,” the commission added.
