The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested an Abuja-based real estate agent, Hajia Adama Adamu, over allegations of a ₦288 million property scam.
In a statement shared on its official social media platform, the commission said the suspect was picked up by operatives of its Ilorin Zonal Directorate following a petition from a complainant who alleged he was defrauded in a failed property transaction.
According to the EFCC, Adamu allegedly collected the sum from Alhaji Tanko Yawale under the guise of helping him purchase a property in Abuja’s Asokoro area.
“The suspect allegedly received ₦288 million from the complainant for the purchase of a property located at House 31, Haile Selassie Street, Asokoro, Abuja,” the agency said.
Investigators further stated that after receiving the payment, the suspect reportedly failed to provide valid ownership documents for the property and became evasive when repeatedly contacted.
“After payment was made, she allegedly failed to produce proper documentation and subsequently became unresponsive, which raised suspicion and led to a formal petition,” the commission added.
The EFCC explained that the arrest was part of its ongoing efforts to curb property-related fraud in Nigeria’s real estate sector, particularly in high-value areas such as the Federal Capital Territory.
A spokesperson for the agency said, “We are intensifying investigations into property scams and urge members of the public to always verify ownership and documentation before making any financial commitments.”
The commission added that the suspect is currently in custody and would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
